Panum Crater in moonlight

Panum Crater, Mono Lake, California.

After spending a few hours photographing South Tufa in moonlight Dan, Olivia, Ralf and I drove to the near-by Panum Crater. It's a beautiful place. We walked down to the base of the volcano crater, setup our cameras and went for a little hike. My camera was pointing towards the North Star. I wanted the edge of rocky volcano formation to point to the center of the star trail circle, imitating the roundness of the volcano itself. During the 50 minute exposure we hiked the Rim Trail that sits on top of the outer ring of the crater. The view was marvelous, overlooking Mono Lake and the sagebrush covered land.

Why and how

Last week at Mono Lake Night Photography Festival I had a chance to hear some really interesting lectures about photography and related subjects. One of my favorite ones was Joe Reifer's presentation about artistic influences (check out his blog post here). I loved it because it made me think of why I like to photograph what I photograph, what is influencing my work, why and how.

For now, just wanted to share a photo I took several years ago in highschool. At that time I was attending drawing classes because I wanted to study graphic design at Art Academy of Latvia. I spent my Thursday evenings and Saturdays drawing Head of Apollo and still lifes. I was somewhat interested in photography but it was not my thing. I loved drawing and other visual arts but never thought that I would be as involved with photography as I am now. This just happens to be one of the few photos I took because the subject seemed interesting. Those four ladies sitting in the park, probably late fall. All still bundled up, watching passerby and sun casting dark, sharp shadows.

Home from Mono Lake

I'm home. It always feels so good returning home after a trip. I had the most amazing time at Night Photography Festival in Mono Lake, California. 6 days and 5 nights of fun, tan, night photography, mountain views, Whoa Nellie Deli, Nicely's, Mono Cone, "lady bars", singing and exploring. Here are two photos until I get to develop my black&white film. Bodie ghost town at sunset and view of Eastern Sierra Nevada seen from Highway 395.

Beach

It's end of the work week, finally. Tomorrow I'm flying out to Night Photography Festival at Mono Lake in California. So exciting! The photo above is from a beautiful place I got to see today and catch the first sun of the season.

Tornado night

Seen from World Trade Center Ave in Boston, MA. The evening of June 1st, the "tornado night" in Massachusetts.

Cone shaped trees 2

In April I took a photo of cone shaped trees in Boston Public Garden. I liked how that image came out so I wanted to return for another session. And I did. This time around it was much warmer compared to the freezing April evening my NESOP classmates and I spent wandering the park. I chose a different grouping of trees and placed my camera low to the ground to hide the lightsources behind the tree so it forms an interesting rim lighting. I've come to a conclusion that I really enjoy returning to locations I've visited before.

Fuji image transfer

A few weeks ago I acquired Polaroid back for my Hasselblad film camera. It was partly because I wanted to sometimes do test shots at night but also because I simply like instant film and wanted to try image transfers. Fuji makes a few different types of film that can be used with this film back - color 100 speed film, B&W 100 and 3000 speed film. For the image transfer I used FP-100C film. I made the exposure with my camera and following a few simple instructions transferred the image to my notebook paper. So here it is, view from my window.
